Abstract:
The topologies of molecules and materials can have profound influence over their resulting properties. Synthetic chemists have been attempting for decades to control topology - that is, the manner is which molecules are entangled or interwoven - with limited success. Our recent work has demonstrated metal-ion template structures such as cyclic helicates and grids are ideal for forming more complex topologies, and offer new routes for increasingly complicated assemblies. The first synthesis of a molecular pentafoil knot, and new efficient routes molecular links will be presented. The use of Ru(II) polypyridyl complexes as dyes for light harvesting, or more recently as visible light photoredox catalysts has become widespread. Our current efforts to incorporate this useful functionality into molecular receptors and cages will be presented.
